Can anyone recomend an oil for 850T-5R. Bought a couple of months ago. Oil changed at dealer along with full service. The stuff they put in 10 40W synthetic oil. Oil looks in condition, not black. No black smoke coming from exhaust. I am new to the car but it seems to be burning a lot of oil. In two weeks (about two hundred miles) from filling it up, it is empty. No oil patches under the car.
I have been topping it up with mobile one. No motorway miles. Is this normal. Do they burn alot of oil? Does the car need checking out. Cheers Dan |

Hi Dan,
Well Volvo here in the UK and USA have a tie up with Castrol to use 5w/30. What every you put in make sure its a quality brand FULLY synthetic with the 'SL' SAE mark on the side, which is the latest high standard. I have used for years and years Mobil 1 5w/50 and now the 0w/40 which is available in Europe/UK. I have purchased recently though Shell Helix too, but you need the 'Ultra version'. While talking of Shell i used the Optimax unleaded, aka Super Unleaded. Volvo recommend for turbos a minimum octane of 97 to 98.7 will be better. I do see some marginal improvement in mileage which out weighs the cost on my point, as i have to count the pennies at the moment being out of work. Changing the oil often and with turbos around the 3k mark is good idea. I do mine between 6 to 10k depending how quick i am clocking the miles up as have a normal aspirated. As for usage some do burn alot, you need to check the oil return is not blocked at the back of the turbo, and flushing out the Oil inter cooler can't but help. And just for you info i am a few miles short of the 200k mark doing my major of my own serviceing, self taught due to dealer charges :-( hope this helps,

Hi Mark
I have been putting normal unleaded petrol in the car, as of this weekend filled it up with Optimax,I shall have to see how it does. To be honest not really too confident in checking the oil return at the back of the turbo, and flushing the inter cooler. Wouldn't know where to start. Have you any books you can recomend, on serviceing etc. Do you know if the 850 Haynes manual covers the 850T5-R. As for the 200k service, I could only dream of been able to do it my self. Thanks again for the help. Dan |

Hi Dan,
the Haynes 850 manual covers the T5R - as far as servicing is concerned there is no difference from the T5. Apart from checking for leaks, wear & tear etc. the only extra things in the 200k service are change of engine oil & filter, change air filter, change spark plugs and then general oiling of hinges/locks etc. You don't say whether your's is an auto or manual, but the Volvo schedule that I have recommends change of Auto fluid at 100k intervals. This in itself is not too difficult to do but if you're not too confident then leave it to a trusted gearbox specialist or independant garage. Cheers. Brian
