Default Fuel Pump

Can anyone confirm that you can definitely hear the fuel pump priming on a 1995 or later 940.when the ignition is switched on?

My car suddenly won't start and I can't hear the fuel pump priming. I've checked the fuses and relay, which are fine. I'm also getting a 12v pulse to the fuel pump connector in the boot when the ignition is switched on. This makes me suspect the pump, but I can't remember for definite if I used to be able to hear it prime.

I don't think the fuel pump priming is so noticeable on the later cars with a single, high-pressure in-tank pump. You also won't notice it if the fuel system is already at pressure. Might be worth checking if you've got fuel pressure at the rail. There is a Schrader valve under the rail for attaching a pressure gauge. You only need a very basic gauge to do this but it is helpful to have one with a flexible hose attached as access under the fuel rail is a bit restricted.

I've used the valve before, to measure fuel pressure. I'll give that a go in a bit, I need to confirm the pump situation before I can move on to anything else. Thanks for the help

Default Priming

At least on the last series of 940 the fuel pump will only prime for a short while when the ignition is switched on for the first time. A second time it will not.
If the pump is seized, a good whack with a piece of wood on the fuel tank sometimes gets it going again for a short while. That's how I got home once. It is not a permanent fix, but at least it pinpoints the problem. Replacement is not too complicated.

I removed it earlier today, it's totally dead so I've ordered a new one. As you said, It was fairly straightforward, just a bit fiddly actually removing it once it was all disconnected.
