Default Wiper linkage - loose spindle

Hi guys, I know this has been posted before and I've looked at the other old posts but on my Volvo V40 2003 the spindle on the wiper linkage is loose which causes the wiper arm to catch on the bonnet when the bonnet is raised.

I've exhausted all other avenues to try and find a new part as it appear that the market only caters for LHD cars and that's no good. Skandix, main dealers, ebay etc. Does anyone have any tricks to resolve the looseness? Or does anyone know where I can purchase a new one. If I get a 2nd hand one then it'll just have the same wear issue.

It's only a minor thing on an old car but I disconnect the battery when not in use so am frequently raising the bonnet.

Where there is already a bend on the thinner section of the wiper arm, i bent mine slightly more. By doing this, the thicker part of the arm where it's fixed to the spindle can then be re-positioned slightly less horizontal, it should then clear the bonnet. If you do this, be careful not to over do the bending of the arm, as it could break !

That might be worth a try.

You will find that the spindle is on a triangular bit that unbolts and can be used on either side, happend to mine. Plenty for sale on fleabay.

Thanks, the problem is that's a LHD linkage and the triangle bits are difference between the LHD and RHD versions. Trust me, I've ordered a LHD one and found out the hard way as I assumed I'd just be able to swap a triangle over.

I've ordered a second hand one. The offside spindle tends to wear but the near side one doesn't so I'm just going to use the near side triangle one from the second hand one and hopefully that will do for now.

I've managed to fix this now. The original spindle was very rusted and had worn the plastic around it. I bought a second hand one, swapped over the spindle then used the triangle part from nearside as this had less wear. Then I still had to bend it a bit as it was still catching. Hopefully all good for a couple of years now. Thanks for all your help with this issue.

I fixed mine today by replacing with a bit from scrapyard. Old one had same problem as yours, spindle Rusty's d ground through plastic. I fitted a new o ring under the washer and e clip. Hopefully it will keep the water out which seems to have been the problem causing the spindle rust. I'm going to fit new o rings to the wife's as well just in case.

Then I found a crack in my windscreen, not here yesterday, running into zone for an MOT failure so now I need a new screen. My V40 is really trying my resolve.
