Default Advice on Purchase of XC60 for newbie

Hi everyone,
I am considering buying an XC60 when my VW golf needs replacing. I was originally planning on a VW tiguan but.... want to move away from VAG cars. We intend to keep the volvo long term so I would really apprciate any advice.

This is the spec I settled with.... what are your thoughts:
XC60, SE Lux with Nav, 2.0 D4 diesel, front wheel drive....

1. advice on manual versus the 8 speed automatic greabox as thinking of getting an automatic this time. Some town driving and some longer journeys on country roads. Occasional motorway.
2. Needs to be low emissions and good MPG so am I right in thinking 2.0 D4 engine is best?
3. not sure of year but pre 2017 is good as dont want to buy a new car and happy to set a budget on the best deal.
4. Leather and sat nav would be good options but not necessarily the R design spec.
5. 2 wheel drive preferable....(for economy and no off roading will be required).

Thank you

I have a d4 r design 181bhp and handles pretty well all though i would go for the AWD as in wet conditions it wheel spins alot and you get torq steer when you plant the throttle. All in all it is a verry good car and good mpg. Also go for one with lower miles becouse working in that engine bay is verry tight and to get at my a/c pump the front end had to come off . I have test drove the vw and audi line up and in my eyes they arnt a patch on the car i have. As any car they have there faults just make sure the recalls have been done e.g the egr system.

Indeed I think you should have posted here: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=187

Never mind... I have pretty much the exact car you are looking for 67 plate XC60 D4 FWD manual one of the last built by November 17 the deliveries had ceased I think and the last cars were dealer ordered rather than customer order to use up the parts in stock certain item like privacy glass bixenon lights and nav was included in all the later cars dealer for options were still available but not factory so you could add parking sensors but not a sunroof to the order.

There are some bits you might expect to be standard which aren’t so decide what you really want. There are plenty of low mile under 3 year old xc60 about plenty at dealers and private. Volvo service history I would say is important they are very software driven and needs dealer to update.

As for issues apart from some intermintent wind noise and a faulty parking sensor mine has had no issues, wheel spin is mostly tyres, missus spins piling away from junctions on oem tyres (conti) but not the winters I’m running now (Nokian) has the car for 21k miles and 15 months at this point, would I have another? Maybe but it would be the auto with adaptive cruise add AWD (2.4 D5 5pot motor or older D4 2.4l) and be lucky to see 40mpg.......

The car was very much designed for the auto box so make sure your left leg is comfy on long motorway journeys mine often isn’t. MPG the trip computer says 47/48 if gentle over an decent average cost is 13/14p a mile on cheap fuel.... I get 11p a mile from employer the A4 tdi manual I had before was under 11p.....mostly

D4 is euro 6 (I think) but without ad blue! Not many are and that is a bonus for me! The standard stereo is ok, nav updates are free download to the usb, doesn’t do car play or advanced features and is a bit clunky.

Rdesign has stiffer suspension and some tweaks SE LUX NAV might have a few more bells.

Get or ensure that you have a reversing camera fitted - it makes reversing very much easier.
Given the supposed advantagees of an AdBlue cleaned exhaust emissions I would have thought that it would help its resale value compared to a non Adblue car.

I came from Landrover and very pleased with my XC60.

brilliant long distance and also good for just pottering around.

the auto box is superb and it would be a shame not to go for it, my first auto and I would never go back to a manual.

the posts re wheel spinning, etc are down to poor driving style, not the vehicle.
