Default 760 GLE small water pump hose split

i have a split in the small hose coming from the rear of the water pump.... it looks very difficult to replace or even get near due to the manifold. any ideas on how to replace this without having to take half the engine apart. many thanks in advance. tony.

Do you have the B28 or B280 engine?

If it's the B280 you can remove the water pump by removing the fan and the fan shroud then it's possible to get to the hoses on the back of the water pump. I had to do this a few years ago when the large hose developed a small split. It took me about three hours and the pair of hoses between the pump and the cylinder heads are a right pain to get back and the nuts securing the fan to the water pump are very soft, but it can be done.

I don't think this trick will work with the B28 engine since the inlet manifold gets in the way.

Actually, the manifold is not difficult to remove. It's only held on by 6 bolts, once removed, the manifold will move enough on the pipes and cables to enable you to gain access. Whilst the manifold is off, it's a good idea to replace the o rings that seal the inlet ports.

I'd agree but I think the B280 manifold may be easier to deal with than the B28 type. I chose not to remove the manifold because the wiring loom was well past its prime and was best left undisturbed. Whoever designed that water pump must surely have had shares in a hose clip factory.

Hi Martin , Just read your post as above, I will now attack the little hoses.
I have just had the radiator & trans. oil cooler renewed, they must have missed these two hoses. Big one has split ,little one is brittle.
Thanks again for the info, once more under the bonnet
Regards Joe

I got my replacement hoses from my local volvo dealer and we found that their parts catalogue was incorrect. They ordered the short large hose for the back of the pump for me but what turned up was completey wrong - it was only about an inch in diameter and about a foot long! We ordered the equivalent part for a B28 engined 264 and that was perfect.

I don't recall the parts as being particularly expensive although it must be about 7 years since I did the job. I figured if I was going to that amount of bother it was worth fitting the proper items since I didn't want to have to do it again in a hurry! A friend of mine still runs the car so I assume they did the job well enough.
