Default XC70 boot hinge water ingress

Opened the boot of my newly purchased 2016 XC70 this morning in the dry but after some heavy overnight rain. As the boot door went vertical all the raindrops ran down and entered the top sill around the door and seemed to flow away safely. However, there was quite a lot of water - probably as a result of the polish the paintwork got before I bought it - and the the two depressions in the sill at each hinge were full of water. Within a few seconds, I noticed water dripping into the boot from the joint in the plastic facing in the internal roof of the boot at the driver side hinge. Quite a bit of water came in - enough to dampen the boot carpet over an area.

Strikes me that the rubber bung in the sill depression might be leaking but there were also some traces of water on the steel door hinge itself as it disappeared into the hinge recess. Is there maybe a way in for water along the hinge mechanism itself?

Needless to say I'm a bit hacked off. Having splashed the cash on a 12 month old vehicle with two years of warranty left I am hoping that this fault is covered by this!

Any words of wisdom from the collected intelligence and experience of this Forum?

The holes for the hinges go inside the car and there is no weather proofing. Just seams to rely on the water running down the sides. So if the channels down each side next to the boot seal get blocked water could get in the boot.

I had this, about 3 years ago,on my XC60. The dealer fixed it under warranty.

It looks like they siliconed the hinges to the body and probably had to take the tailgate off to do it. No problems since.

This is common. There's even a part available that solves the problem. Volvo part number 9154842.

I had the same problem until I mounted this rubber piece. Not any time since then.
