2010 XC90 Auto - loss of acceleration at higher speeds
We have had this car since new, always dealer serviced.
A week or so ago we started getting a problem where we'd lose all acceleration at high speed (>40mph) if you put your foot down. If you tickle the throttle you can build up speed, but if you boot it the revs and speed don't increase, and the gearbox doesn't change up. From a standstill if you accelerate hard the engine revs fully in first then you get the problem in higher gears, so the engine is able to rev fully. I think I've heard the turbo blowoff valve at low speeds but am not sure. The swirl control rod's been broken for the last X years and I reluctantly let the Volvo dealership 'fix' it on Monday, they assured my wife this would sort things out, but the problem is back today. I've had a good search but can't find any threads that descrive this problem. Any thoughts? Thanks for any input, Nial. |

Thanks for the reply Greg, a few questions...
1) Does this need an ODB2 scanner? 2) I also have an 03 V70, with SRS problems is there a tool that can handle the XC90 and this, and reset the SRS warning? I've had a good google to see if there's something everyone uses but I can't find anything. I don't mind spending some money to get the right reader. 3) Should the garage not have read these before declaring the swirl control rod was the problem? Thanks again, Nial. |

A cheap OBD2 scanner will give you some codes but the best tool is VIDA/Dice. You can find them on eBay or Cheshired5 sells them. You will need a laptop with Win7 Pro to run the software. Cost about £80 but worth it especially if you have more than one Volvo.
I can't comment on the competency of your dealer. I wouldn't trust mine as far as I can throw them! Greg |

[Edit] Arse, looks like I can't DM him until I have 30 posts. Found his for sale post. [/Edit] Nial. Last edited by NialStewart; Aug 26th, 2016 at 10:29. |

He's regularly on here so he's likely to pick up this thread anyway.

My wife says the 'Engine Service required" status message is back. Will there definitely be DTC codes stored against this? Nial. |

OK, she's arranged to take it over first thing to demonstrate the problem.
I'll see if she can persuade them to stick it on VIDA/Dice and see what fault codes there are. Having paid £700 unnecessarily having been told this will definitely fix it I'll have her prepared in case they try to charge for this. Thanks again for the feedback, Nial. |

DTC codes provided by the dealer this morning....
ECM-1517 Turbo Control - Pressure too high ECM-1540 Turbo control - Pressure too high TCM-0A31 Control module comunication. Signal missing from Engine Control Module (ECM). Any thoughts? From what my wife said the mechanics said they would just blindly start working through the VIDA checklist (without using their brains). [Edit] I absolutely caned the car from Pitlochry to Edinburgh (though keeping to the speed limits of course) the day before this first showed up, I don't know if that's relevent.[/Edit] Thanks for any feedback, Nial.
