Unhappy Engine service required

Hi all

I've had my 2004 XC90 since July '12. Two weeks after buying it an error message 'Transmission service required' came up on the display. I had it plugged in to a computer but nothing was detected so assumed it was a just a hiccup.

Several months later it happened again along with the occasional 'Engine service required' and going into limp mode. The 'Engine service required' message would come and go and limp mode would either go by itself as I was driving or if I switched off the ignition.

I took it to a nearby volvo specialist who found a fault code relating to sticky valves in the gearbox, a common fault but also an expensive one! £1000 later and it's fixed! They never mentioned anything about the engine so I assumed the two went hand in hand.

So I picked the car up from the garage last week, the following day I got my revs above 3rpm when pulling away and everything was fine, sigh of relief! This of course was short lived as later that day I did the same and the 'Engine service required' came on. It only seems to come on when the revs are high and possibly only when the engine is cold (I'm yet to try it when it's warm). Always goes into limp mode. Doesn't feel like there's anything wrong but then I'm no mechanic!

Please, any advice as to what it could be or things to look at would be greatly appreciated as spending a grand on it less than 6 months after buying it was more than enough, I can't afford anymore!! Unfortunately no warranty was offered and the mileage is too high to take out a policy myself.

Thank you.

Hopefully there should be a member with dice/vida near you who can read any codes you may have.

There are no messages stored on the display, will they still be stored else where? I had the codes read in November and they only mentioned the fault to do with the transmission.
