Red face Noisy at the back at over 40mph

I have just bought an 06 xc90 with 130k. It has anew set of tyres and full Volvo service history. However at speed it is very noisy at the back of the vehicle.

It isn't a knocking sound or high pitched. Almost sounds like rubbing? It has the same noise in neutral at higher speed. Any ideas?

Could be wheel bearings ? Does the pitch change if you gently lean the weight of the car to the left or right whilst moving ?

With that sort of mileage on a 06 XC90 - coud be anything...unless you're a fully trained professional mechanic with experience on this model Volvo...while you can go get your money back...otherwise I'd question the "full Volvo service history" go to the delaer concerned and find out why it wasn't picked up...you're looking at a lot of money to fix - whether its the drivetrain, suspension, brakes...anything...and a lot of time to repair...seriously get out of it if you can...and good luck, you'll need it!!!

Almost certainly a wheel bearing. These are not cheap but perfectly possible DIY - my son did mine as I hadn't time.

It may be just one side or both. Jack the rear of the car up, chock front wheels, put the selector in Neutral and spin the wheel. If the bearing has gone you'll hear it.

There is a thread on here somewhere detailing how to replace them.

Thanks for the advice. I will take it to Keillor fit as they changed all four tyres in January and get the to check the tyres. Whilst it is jacked up I will check the wheels for play.

Hopefully it is just a bearing. I won't take it to a main dealer. From what I am reading they don't seem very reliable. A bearing is a bearing after all.

Default sorted with bearing

All,

The blissful sound of silence is resumed.

The noise was caused by the rear drivers side wheel bearing. Not an easy job to replace but managed it. Total cost of hub was eighty pounds so probably saved a small fortune and learnt loads. Would definitely do brake discs and pads.

Thanks to all who contributed.

Thanks for the update. Where did you get the hub/bearing for £80 and what make was it ?
