1.6 D Cambelt Change Interval
Hi
I have a S40 with the 1.6D 16V engine same basic engine as the ford 110BHP and PSA 110BHP ones. There is lots of conflicting information on it. Is this engine chain driven from exhaust to inlet cam? If it has a cambelt from exhaust cam to crank what is the service interval? Its a June 2006 UK model. Hard to tell from the user book as it contradicts itself and there seems to be evidence that the book info is out of date. Thank you. |

Hi,
I know nothing about cars, stopped doing my own work when I scrapped my Triumph Dolomite. However, looking at my Routine Service checklist for an S40 petrol 2007-11MY, it states "1.6 Renew timing and auxilliary drive belts & timing belt tensioner - check date/mileage decal" at an an interval of 10 years or 100,000 miles. That seems an awefully long time/mileage to me, I hope someone will confirm this for you. Last edited by frankie; Mar 28th, 2012 at 15:07. |

See the third post down, has an attached service schedule. 10 years or one hundred and fifty thousand miles. Certainly a long time, my C30 is coming up to seventy thousand and I'll be doing mine this summer regardless. |

Thanks for the info.
That should be the length these things last. We are all so used to short service lengths due to cost cutting that we are worried when a company puts their money where their mouth is. Lets see if I can keep myself from buying a kit ahead of time! |

i spoke to Volvo today about this and they confirmed once again for the 1.6D it's 150000 or 10 years.

my c30 handbook does say 75K too, i appreciate that they are saying that the books are out of date.
I have previous with a belt that went, so for the sake of my sanity, mine is getting done in a couple of months time at the 75K mark (probably a wee bit before) My a3's belt was changed at 60k, if im honest im getting nervy at being at 70!! The vectra (an old car that we kept for day to day use) the belt went at 80k (after not changing it when it ought to have been done) Still, it got traded in during the scrappage scheme. Every cloud and all that. Last edited by dolcered; Mar 29th, 2012 at 11:01. |

2.0D was indeed 150k miles/ 10 years and 1.6D is probably same.
Personally I would replace before 150k, maybe at 125k partly because its a quite high mileage and also because at 150k the DPF comes up for its second change and the service bill then would be absolutely huge. Better to stagger and spread the cost assuming that a Volvo dealer will carry out service that is. There are however no reports of belt failure that I've ever come across on these forums, so this area of the engine I think is quite strong. If you have an older car, in the service handbook it defined what various intervals are, but unless I've missread something the newer ones don't give much info. This is on the schedule/ticklist that comes with service paperwork. I suppose Volvo change spec occassionally and it keeps the handbooks current. |

How is the belt change interval so long over a VW or Audi? Is it a chain?
Other probing question, are the 1.6D engines on the 2007 model a 16 V or 8 V? If now 8 valve, why did they change? |

The old 1.6ds were 16V. The new D2 is 8V due to emissions, torque and other bits and bobs. A diesel doesn't really need more than 2 valves per cylinder. They are mainly only required on petrols (non turbos especially).
The 1.6d has a chain AND a belt. Belt being between crank and exhaust cam. Chain between exhaust and inlet cam.
