Default MOT tomorrow - no fuel gauge - will it pass?

Hi all

Got my car booked in for it's MOT tomorrow at 10:00 and I've just realised that as my fuel gauge has been faulty for a few months and always shows as empty, it may not pass the MOT.

Can anyone confirm if it's a testable item and will it fail?

Cheers
Simon

No reason why it should fail, how would they check it??

I'm an MOT examiner in NI....

So when they start it up and the needle is in the red, the fuel warning light is on and the info centre is screaming FUEL it wouldn't be a problem?

Would they be happy putting it through the test when its running on fumes and could conk out halfway through? What happens if I try to reassure them there's plenty of petrol in the tank and its just that the fuel gauge is broke?

Just tell them you're bad for letting it run to the bottom if they mention it

Mine went through it's test with the fuel warning light on btw

I'm sure they will take your word for it .
You might be able to repair the fuel sender in the tank if you take it out and find a wire broken off

fuel sender is not a testable item, some cars that are on the road dont even use them, like when people use alloy tanks and locate to boot etc

another thing that dont test is the speedo is working correctly, which is a bit of an odd one

How do you think the speedo can be tested?

The speedo would register when they're testing the brakes on the rolling road, I would think.

At about 2mph road-wheel speed? I don't think so. It's not a dyno test and they wouldn't be allowed to wind it up fast anyway unless the car is secured (plus they'd face getting sued for damages if they broke - or even scratched - anything).
