Default "No oil pressure - stop safely" (Happy New Year car!)

Lo all

120 miles away from home, car decides to display said warning.

It did it the other day, and was low on oil, but this time has oil - so, is it likely to be a pump, or a sensor?

It kept flashing up and vanishing, but was slowly starting to stay on more, so I put some more oil in, and stayed at or below 60mph and it was quiet for the last few miles.

We have to get 120 miles back again, later today - any thoughts?

Cheers, and Happy New Year All!

Hi Pete,

Its possible you have a faulty oil pressure sensor, how much oil did you need to get it back to normal levels?

Happy New Year to you too

Lo,

It was on the bottom level before, but is now over halfway. Oil is dirty, but overdue a service. Temp was fine too.

On My old S60 (T5) which I had not seen the light come one when oil level is on halfway, its possible your sensor is knackered. My Current D5 has so far not needed any top ups of oil since I had it.

The light and message is an oil PRESSURE warning it is not a LEVEL sensor .
Oil level makes no differnece to pressure until the sump is empty . then it is too late of course. Your first move is to fit a test gauge in place of the oil light switch to check the actual oil pressure when hot .. should be a minimuim 1 bar at idle and 3 bar over 2000 rpm ..

Well we need to get home, so what's the best plan? Slow drive, recover car?

The choice is yours. If you drive it and the pressure is low you could damage the engine. If you pay for recovery and it is only a sensor problem you incur quite a cost. AA or RAC might help you, if you are a member.

There have been a couple of similar post regarding this failure lately, I think they both resulted in a wrecked engine when the owner tried to drive them home.

A problem with S60 that can cause your oil pressure light to flickering is often caused by failed o-rings in the oilpump pickup tube connection and then air can enter the system which makes the oil pressure lower.

How is the maintenance history for the car?
Another possibility can be a clogged oil pick up screen if oil changes have been neglected or as already mentioned a faulty oil pressure sensor.

Is your oil level now correct according to the dipstick both too low oil level and too high oil level can cause the oil pressure liught to flickering.

If it was my car i would absolutely not try to drive it.

Angry

i'd not drive it.

I have the same problem with my S60. I've had the sump off twice by a volvo technician. The Pick up tube tested to see if it was blocked and it wasn't. The o rings all changed twice and still no fix... finally the oil pump was changed for a new one yesterday. Drove it for 5 miles and up pops the warning message again. On top of this I've also had a new sensor fitted.

I spoke to someone today and they have suggested that I change the engine. Am I ****ed........ Very slightly.
