Default Fuel pump relay question

Should the fuel pump on an '89 GLT run for a few seconds when I first turn on the ignition? Mine doesn't, and the engine always takes 4-5 seconds on the starter before it fires.

Mine is the mechanical injection with a green relay. If it should start the pump, is this a relay function, or does it get a signal from elsewhere?

Thanks in advance

When the FP relay went on our 265 GLE many years ago, a wise AA man unclipped the relay cover (it comes off easily), wedged a bit of card in the relay and said to remove the card as soon as the engine stops. This 'bodge' got herself home without further problems.

Hi, yes you should be able to hear it buzz for a few seconds with the ignition on.
Open passenger door to help with hearing it.
I always thought that if the relay was dead it was a no start issue, so that info may rule out yours being dead.

Before you do anything drastic, take a look at the main fuel pump fuse. Very often they fail especially if a plastic bodied one has been fitted. Look for signs of corrosion and over heating. Clean up the terminals and refit, probably wise just to replace it and then try.

Thanks Paul. The fuse is clean/new and the pump works fine, except that it does not come on for a few seconds with the ignition. I can hear the pump inside the car, and the in tank pump via the filler cap, so both are working with the engine running.

I will try another relay sometime, but this car has been subjected to some pretty daft wiring alterations in the past, and it may be that the relay is not getting power when it should - Oh! I can test for that, good idea!

Regards,

Bill
