Thumbs down Tempa Spare Wheel no longer available?

Just ordered my XC60 this week and the dealer says that Volvo are no longer supplying the Tempa spare wheel.

I would feel much safer driving with the knowledge that I do not have to rely on a can of gunk, so is their a supplier of a suitable alternative and where does it fit anyway?

Try asking your dealer to swap one out from a stock or showroom car. The spare wheel fits under the false floor of the boot and contains a foam insert with all the tools in it.

I know what you mean about the can of foam solution, I didn't trust it either!

How does the can of foam work when you have shredded the tyre?

I guess that this is somewhat rhetorical - or do Volvo provide a lifetime callout service (for free) to support you when the foam won't work?

I wouldn't want a fullsize spare in the car as it would use too much space, but I wouldn't feel happy having to rely on foam (and have you ever taken a tyre off after this foam has been in it? - what a mess!)

I have an XC60 on order, and my dealer told me there was no Tempa spare wheel available due to lack of raw materials for their manufacture and 'excessive demand from China' (for raw materials, wheels or Volvos? - I'm not sure!)

Not sure he would do that, as my delivery is not until mid September.

There must be a company that makes space saver wheels, any one with a name?

for a steel wheel hub and a pirelli tyre? Doesn't sound very convincing.

This is madness. Let's assume that the temporary spare wheel is still available, but is subject to a temporary shortage for whatever reason.
My suggested course of action:
Insist that the spare wheel is included in your order on the basis that it is listed as a no-cost option. If it is not currently available, you will take it when it comes back in stock.
If you don't do that and you order one later, it will cost you £600.

Having the option of a spare is a big plus point for the Volvo. It will be a huge retrograde step if it is removed permanently.

I can see I would have to do what I was doing when I was buying Zafiras - swapping the spare over to the new car each time I changed.

Hope it doesn't come to that as the next XC60 facelift might be a version with a bigger boot (like the X3) if there is no spare on offer.

My simple answer would be to threaten to cancel the order

I'm sure one would materialise fairly rapidly

It's kite flying. Seeing if the customer will put up with it. If buyers in general agree to it, spare wheels will be discontinued for all

In this part of the UK riding round without a spare is simply barking

It doesn't - as I found out to my cost in a previous car. In that car it wasn't a can, more a kit including a compressor to inject and pump up the tyre.

About as much use as a chocolate teapot given the bloody great hole I had in the sidewall.

I spent 4 hours waiting for the RAC to get their act together and got home at 1:30am. I wasn't a happy bunny.

After that I sourced a space saver for the car on eBay for about £20 IIRC. I can't imagine the XC60 one is special so as long as you can find the correct size I'd guess that would be an option.

Happily, I didn't realise with the XC60 there is a choice when ordering, but luckily the DTD dealer's salesman, being the star he is, ordered the spacesaver option for me
