Clutch Pedal Sinks to the floor
Started the car this morning and clutch pedal sank to the floor.
Its a 1.6 Volvo S40 (2000) Searching around looks like it could be; Master Cylinder leak Matser Cylinder air in system or pressure Master Cylinder itself gone. We've had a frost and tempratures have been sub zero past few weeks - not sure if related. Anyay - I am no mechanic so just wanted any advice on what to pay and what not to pay. Im gonna call a mobile mechanic out. thanks |

first step is to bleed it through with fresh fluid , if the fluid is old and filthy it may have absorbed water and frozen . I doubt if anyone has changed the fluid in the clutch system since new !

Many will tell you that the cylinder (master and or slave) will need to be replaced (exchange items). This is not necessarily true. I have recently stripped and fitted new seals to both in my V40 diesel. Problem was not in the slave (as advised) but was one of the seals in the master disintegrating and leaving little shards of rubber to get trapped between the second seal and the cylinder body. The cylinder repair kits are available on eBay.

In my case it was hydraulic hose rubbing against battery negative wire. That is how my clutch pedal sinked and lost some brake fluid. Brakes still worked, because clutch draining outlet is higher than the one for brakes.
Hose is located under battery tray. http://www.vozimvolvo.si/e107_plugin...opic.php?43795 |

Update: Got a mechanic to fit a new master cylinder and change all the fluids as they were black from the failing seals. The part was over £150 and labour was another £100. I'm happy to be back on the road.
