Default 2.0T auto brake/transmission "clonking"

I have recently brought my car so I don't know if this noise has just started or it has always had it and I only just noticed but here goes. If you have the car in park and push the footbrake you can hear a noise from the transmission tunnel and also feel the knocking if you hold the gear lever or the handbrake. If you then put the car in drive/neutral/reverse and push the footbrake it doesn't do it. The noise almost sounds like something like a cable is slack inside the transmission tunnel when the car is in park and lets something tap the body somewhere. Any ideas?

Don't worry, you are right it is the electronic locking mechanism which prevents you from moving into gear without applying the footbrake.

Another great Volvo safety feature!

Cheers

Does yours make that noise when you touch the brake pedal then? If so then I won't worry about it.
