I've just bought a 54 plate (MY 2005) XC90 D5 geartronic.

On my way back from the garage (approx 140 miles - mostly motorway), the computer read 42mpg at journey's end with the cruise control set at 70mph and the tyres (Continentals) set at 39psi (the eco setting I understand from the forum). Obviously I was very happy with this.

The car was quiet and smoother (better than my previous P2 V70). But when I drove the 25 miles (mainly A + B roads) into work this morning I felt the tyre pressure wasn't helping the ride comfort. I could feel most of the lumps and bumps on our wonderfully manicured roads (!!!). BTW fuel consumption dropped to 39.5mpg - again a figure I'm more than happy with.

Therefore, I was wondering if you guys set the tyre pressures at a compromise level. The fuel flap says 32psi, unless fully loaded. Would something like 34 or even 36psi give a better quality of ride over the lumps and bumps??? Ride comfort is important to me, especially when driving home after a long day. I'm more than willing to lose a bit on the consumption, if it means a smoother ride.

Cheers,

Finbo

The post above said his was 70% blocked and it did improve his mpg when he cleaned it.

All the best

What's your reasoning for that Mike?

All the best.

Well it seems that in slow (my Wife's) driving it has only added 1.5mpg.

In fast driving is has added approx 5mpg.

Closing it would increase mpg.

I did ask a question in the engines section, which I then answered via Wiki about how EGR works.

The Wiki page on the EGR thinks your car will fail it's emissions test if you do that Mike.

All the best.
