Default T5 amd 2.5T difference ?

I wonder if any of you clever folks could tell me the difference between a V70 T5 and a V70 2.5T ?

I know the T5 has about 30 BHP more but is this because the T5 has a different turbo, or some other factors ?
I suppose I basically want to know if the 2.5T be upgraded to the same power as the T5 without spending thousands, or is there really much noticeable difference in everyday use ?

Thanks.

The 2.5T is a strong performer, although from a finger in the air guess from reading things on here, does seem more susceptible to head gasket failure.

As to the differences, well it will have a different turbo - the 2.5T is a low-pressure turbo engine - so not huge amounts of boost, but available over a wide spread of revs.

The 2.5T is closely related to the NA 2.5 20v engines, in that my understanding is that there's no changes to the internals.

The T5 engine will have a larger turbo, and the cylinder capacity is reduced on account of them being lined, to beef up the internals of the engine a bit to cope with the additional boost and heat. Over a stock 2.5 20v NA engine, there may be other internals that are bolstered (con rods, perhaps) - one of the T5 experts will be able to confirm that.

As a result, the driving characteristics are different between the T5 and the 2.5T. The 2.5T is a smooth, well powered engine that doesn't exhibit much in the way of lag, because the turbo is smaller and spools up quicker (and likely from lower revs too) so as a result, will feel on the boil over a greater spread of revs than a T5.

However, a T5 produces significantly more power and boost, and although there's always going to be some lag with a HPT engine, when on song will pull very strongly.

So the engines, turbos and driving characteristics are different.

As to tuning, well both get tuned. Were it me, I'd be more confident having a T5 tuned - simply based on it already being beefed up internally, whereas the 2.5T isn't (or at least isn't to any notable degree). And as I mentioned earlier, there's been a few members mentioning 2.5Ts and head gasket failure in the same breath, so I'd be a bit more cautious about having one chipped significantly.

Well to answer your question as phrased, it wouldn't cost thousands to have the power of a 2.5T boosted to around that of a stock T5.

That said, personally, if I wanted that outcome, I'd just buy a T5.

Hi According to Muscas, the T5 pre Sept 99 was the 2319 cc engine. The Sept 99 on car had the 2435 cc engine. The pre Feb 99 car was cable throttle rather than ETM.

That would be a big surpise to me. AFAIK the T5 engine has always had the reduced cylinder capacity on account of it having the bores lined.

And Parkers doesn't agree, neither does wikipedia. I suspect the Volvo website would confirm it's still the 2.3 derivative for the T5.

yes, that would seem strange, the only time they changed the T5 engine is on the new generation, when it becomes the 2521cc engine which is now also used in the C30, Focus ST etc...

As far as i know it's always been 2319cc on the 70s classics

The last of the Classic Rs had 2.5 engines and 265 BHP as standard.
