So if the transmission fluid and filter are replaced regularly as part of routine maintenance, the Powershift isn't bad?

You also have to treat it differently to a torque convertor gearbox.

My 2012 V70 D5 has the sport mode and manual option

The sport mode, selected by moving the gear selector to the +/- track but not selecting any gear manually, was first introduced with the T6 engine only.

Just like your's, my 2012 XC70 D5 has the sport mode too. That was the first model year that incorporated the sport mode with the D5 engine, but at that time not with the D3. At least not in Sweden.
Our 2016 D4 XC70 also has sport mode, but by then I think all engines had it.

When sport mode is selected the gearbox is still fully automatic, but with these changes:
  • More eager to engage lockup completely. In normal Drive position, lockup will be somewhat released (called limited slip lockup) when it's beneficiary for reducing engine vibrations.
  • Typically selects one step lower gear at the same speed.
  • Quicker and more jerky gear shifts.
  • More eager to downshift when you accelerate.
I don't consider my XC70 to be a sports car, regardless of gearbox, so I call it strong mode rather than sport mode. Sometimes handy when towing heavier trailers, especially on hilly roads, as you are all the time ready with a bit higher engine speeds. With a heavy trailer behind you don't notice the jerk at gear shifts either.

A side effect of S mode is that it doesn't engage when the cruise control is running the car. But as soon as you nudge the accelerator pedal it does. Since my car is too old to have gear shift paddles on the steering wheel, I sometimes use this characteristics when towing my caravan. Sport mode selected and running along the main road on cruise control. If a steep hill is coming up, I press the accelerator pedal a little. Box shifts down 6 -> 5 and I can maintain the speed, then just release the pedal at the crest. If I let it run on its own in D, it will slow down a bit before it gives up and shifts down, and by that time I get a downshift 6 -> 4 and high revs and noise and stuff.

Sport Mode tightens up handling on my late 2014 VEA-engined V70 D4, possibly by using more engine braking to help keep the car's bulk under tighter control when lifting off the gas.

It makes the car's handling feel more tidy and almost fun, but not as enjoyable as it's Mondeo sibling.

In what respect?

An example is that you mustn't leave Powershift transmission in gear if holding the car stationary on the brakes at traffic lights or in a queue as that will cause the transmission to overheat.

Don't tow a Powershift car is another.

Hmm, I try not to do that in a regular geartronic auto box to be honest. It gives chance for the brake discs to cool down... If I'm at lights and on a level surface, I usually knock it into neutral as the car won't roll anyway. If on a slight hill, I put the handbrake on and put it in neutral to let the handbrake do the work and not the transmission.

I know auto's can't be towed. Hopefully the AA or RAC know the same!

Are Powershift's 5 speed or 6 speed?

No idea.

Any Powershift drivers here?

That’s what the chap above referred to when he said the torque converter is locked up more of the time.

It’s still the same gearbox, the sport mode is all done in software.
