I'm not 100% sure it's always the case as I said in an earlier post, I have been running a silver calcium battery in my 96 940 for quite a while with no issues.

Charges well over 14v

My car has the old 80amp alternator as well

Unless you have a smart alternator, lead-acid. A "dumb" alternator won't normally charge a calcium/silver-calcium battery effectively.

I would say my alternator looks pretty basic and he is 26 years old but i'm going to have to draw the line at calling him dumb

It's a Bosch alternator so unless it's the later type that resembles a Nippon-Denso alternator but is definitely Bosch then it's a dumb alternator.

For clarification, the Nippon-Denso alternators fitted to some of the later 9xx models are NOT smart alternators, they are also dumb.

I've a Nippon Dumbass so will continue to seek a lead acid battery.
