And, down the oily way we go...

I recently put Mobil 5W/30 in my 1.8 2003 V40 Petrol. It thins the oil down a bit from 10W/40 after if its not been serviced for a while, particularly with a good hot run - it just sailed through the MOT emissions test with this stuff added.

The 10W/40 semi-mineral based Castrol oils are good in these engines. 5W is thinner than 10W (the W meaning Winter). The 5W is better for colder climates for starting and protecting the engine.

Warning - don't put in thick oil like 20W/50 because this can mess up the VVT unit on a petrol engine because the solenoid can burn out trying to push around the thicker oil.

The /30 and /40 is really about the temperature range the oil runs at 100degC, again /30 tending to be thinner than /40.

Within the UK, 10W/40 is generally advised for weather either really hot and over 32degC or below -8degC when really cold outside. But popping some 5W/40 or 5W/30 in when it's really cold and down below -8degC helps the engine start better (and protects it from wear too).

The 10w/40 is only specified for the Renault 1.9 diesel .

The volvo petrol engines are 5w/30 as you know ;-)

I decided to use 10/40 in my petrol cars because of the moderate climate
and the time of day I generally drive and I figured out some wonky percentage
for coolant for the same reason, but it's still all a bit hocus pocus

anyway I knew intimately some folks associated with one of the No1 racing teams
over here a few years ago and they didn't use that oil in the race cars
nor the same brand
