Unhappy 6 Year Service

It's service time! That's pretty much what my car is saying to me anyway. I called up Volvo today and the lovely lady on the other end of the phone responded to my request for a service with "Oooo... you're due the 6 year service. That's a big one. It's coming in at over £1000".

Yep, that call didn't last long. It was down to the fact they're saying the DPF needs changing. After doing some research, many people are saying (here and elsewhere) that the DPF should be changed at 75,000 miles. The catch here is whilst my C30 is nearly 6 years old, it's only got 56k on the clock.

If I were having the "5 year" (62.5k) service done it would cost £230, 6 year (75k) is £1130 - that's before the cost of my fudged aircon.

My question is simple, should I get the DPF replaced now or hold off for the, at least, 12 months it's going to take for me to make up ~19,000 miles? If I were to hold off, is there anyway to get Volvo to agree to do the 62k service and then replace the DPF at a later time?

I'd really appreciate any help - I hadn't researched specific servicing costs before buying the car earlier this year (lesson learnt) so was caught by surprise when quoted.

In my view the DPF does not yet need changing. Many on this forum manage 100k mile without changing. Get a quote from an indi or ask Volvo to service the car but not change the DPF, get them to check the ELOYS fluid and top up as required.

Talk to the service manager and not the front desk. They are a lot more sensible. The DPF and EOLYS are on miles not time.

Default Extortion!!

Your situation describes me right now perfectly (also 6 years old, 55k miles)! Just had the call with Volvo, was also quoted over £1000 to change the DPF.

Did you end up getting the regular cheaper service done with just topping up the fluids? Any issues with it so far? I'm about to go back to Volvo and get them to do Iain is suggesting.

Our V50 1.6D is now at 94,000 on the original DPF. It is very important that you get the EOLYS additive tank refilled and the counter reset with VIDA at 75,000 but it's your call as to whether you change the DPF. Obviously, Volvo say you should but a friend of mine's C30 1.6D went to 134k before it started to cause problems and had to be changed.

I intend to run ours until it begins to cause bother. I might cave in and replace it at around 100k but we'll see what funds allow. It will not be being done by a Volvo garage if I do get it done though, that's for sure.
