I put the key in my S40 today, and when I turned the key in the ignition the electrics did not come on, I instead got a message saying "Key Failure, Try Again".
I tried a few times, and received the same error. On about the fourth time the key worked and the engine started. I've had a quick look online and some people have reported it was the first sign of the steering column failing, which is a very expensive repair. Do you think this is likely? On a hopefully unrelated note, the car has taken a while to start for the last few months. It starts first time, every time, but I have to hold the key in the third turn of the ignition for a good few seconds. I think it may be that the battery is a old (it's done over 120,000 miles). Could this be related? Thanks for the advice. I've only owned a car for a few months (I have two now) but have already forked out in excess of £2,000 for maintenance! |

Probably not a sign of the steering column failing but probably more with the common problem of the ignition and the key being read.
First thing to do is check battery and operation of the 2nd key to ascertain whether or not it is an actual specific key problem or not. You will then either be looking at a new ignition switch of which Volvo are on about the 5th or 6th iteration. It is therefor always worth checking with a dealer on the most up to date part number required. ![]() |
