Default Steering column

I hope someone will be able to point me in the right direction regarding movement in the steering column of my 1987 240. I can feel it move when I first drive off and if I grab the column under the dash it will move slightly? I have checked the bolts holding both ends and they seem tight?

Do you mean

1) the outer tube is loose and not attached fully to the bulkhead
2) there is sideways movement of the column inside the tube
3) there is up and down movement of the column in the tube
4) there is rotational play between the steering wheel and the lower column ?

I think it's this one?

1) the outer tube is loose and not attached fully to the bulkhead

I can grab the whole of the steering column, under the dash, and it moves slightly, which is the feeling I get when I come to a standstill or on a slow left or right reverse

I think it attaches at the steering lock bracket? Aren't there 3 (?) special bolts with sheer-heads securing the column assembly to the bulkhead?
