Just had another thought. Even though I'm 90% sure the diaphram's the culprit, it is possible that the needle might be on the wonk. If the needle's not secured in exactly the correct position, it won't insert into the jet correctly resulting in insufficient fuel coming out
Seeing as your man is taking the top off the carb to fit the diapharm, it's a good time to check this. The needle is secured in with a little screw. The base of the needle should sit exactly flush with the surface of the piston. Then, when the top of the carb is fixed back on, if you lift the piston with your finger, it should fall back onto the bridge with a good clink. If it doesn't then the needle is fouling on the jet and the needle isn't 'centred' properly and it needs re-adjusting NB: this is a different process to how to centre the jet on an earlier Stromberg

cheers, they said they took the carb apart for a quick clean and to see if anythings the culprit as they tried adjusting it and it was doing nothing, and im not sure how they know its running although i think that they said they could tell just by the way it was firing. The diaphragm would probably have had to be replaced soon anyway as it was getting old and its a relatively cheap part and it sounds like the culprit so they might as well. ill call up later and talk about it further, worst come to the worst and hopefully its just the needle itself. cant thank you guys enough for all this and its actually being really useful in teaching me what i can do so i figure ill be saving up for the electronic ignition hopefully as soon as the cars been sorted.

well its sorted, all it took was the simple task of putting in a new carburettor diaphragm, although im sure the new ignition points and timing must have also helped considerably, next stop fixing my exhaust, and installing a new petrol tank. thanks again for all your advice and i think i might have to go for a drive in it as soon as i get home- and hopefully this time i wont be worrying about the misfires and my pride and joy ripping herself apart,
