I remember reading something in a car magazine years ago that T5's limited the boost in 1st to reduce wheelspin, can't remember anything more than that though, it must have been about 10 years ago...

how do the cars 'know' they are in first ?
Or do they work it from sensor transitions ? ie. boost based on vehicle speed, so if the car is stationary and WOT is applied the ECU limits boost ? Chris

300s equipped with the 'economy change-up' light had a switch aligned so that the light was disabled in 5th. I'm guessing the T5 had something similar...or it could reference speed to RPM.

I would say it is partially down to the fact that first gear is rarely selected except when the car is at a standstill and therefore every sensor on the car will be registering an idle and no load state; but more so that fact that the ECU will know which gear the car is in by rpms and road speed. Cheers, Dan. |
