when is the noise mostly occuring? I had this problem, turned out a spring holding the front brake in place had came out and the movement of the brake was causing the noise.
Also could be the bearings in one of the belt pulleys has gone. Had this also, again causing the tapping noise. Althought these are both front head areas, noise travels strangely in cars, can be very hard tracking down intermittent faults like that. Hope this helps

Default s40 engine noise

Cheers, i here the noise when the car is stopped, doesnt matter wether the car is hot or cold,it comes on when it feels like it. The front brakes and timing are getting done the next week or so, just waiting for parts to turn up,So hopefully that will sort it.
