OKay. Fitted the new seal, figured out the arrow on sender actually faces the rear (hope so anyway!) then made a tool for turning the retaining ring. I cut a strip of steel to 36cm then bent it round a 4 inch pipe then welded the ends together making a 11.3cm hoop, to fit inside the retaining ring, then I then put some touchup paint on the plastic teeth and pressed the band onto it to get paint on the areas that need to be cut out. Then i just cut out the slots (I have a plasma cutter so the whole job took 20 minutes)
Screwed the thing together then with help of an assistant pumped up the fuel tank with air to check for leaks. It was almost airtight but found a crack in the middle of the top of the sender unit! This was not causing the torrents of fuel pouring out the other day but still needed fixing so I carefully melted the crack together with a soldering iron and retested the tank using air and washing up liquid and water like you do with tyres, and Viola, she's fixed! Hope this helps someone else out in the future. For some reason the board is set so I can't edit the title of thread now so can a mod tidy it up by taking out the southampton bit and adding that problem is fixed or put sender unit or something in title, thanks Last edited by willfromsussex; Mar 2nd, 2011 at 01:09. |
