I had some fears about this year's MoT. I knew it would fail as windscreen washers not working, but there was always the fear of structural rust, and possibly excessive emissions. In fact after washer pump replaced I am the proud possessor of a new MoT certificate, just a couple of advisories, LH headlight reflector corroded, and RH front spring mount deteriorated but not urgent. Emissions surprised me, all well within the permitted limits. Not bad for a thirty-year old car which has covered nearly 235,000 miles!

Next thing is to try to muster up the funds to get some of the bodywork sorted.

Over the years I've noticed that MOT testers can be quite subjective in their assessment. Last year I had an advisory for rusted rear trailing arms. I brushed them down, chipped off the flaking rust , and then slopped on black protective paint. This year there was no comment.

In the past I've had a comment that a suspension bush was failing. It had a bit of excess rubber bulging out, which I trimmed off. There has been no comment since.

I don't doubt that, so many mechanics will just make a snap reaction to what appears obvious. I'm fortunate in that the testers have carried out all work on the car for the past twelve years, so have a good idea of what's going on. They're also honest, never do any jobs that clearly aren't necessary.

It is since the MOT testers rules have got so much more stringent and complex now. they are so " worried" that anything they miss or do not report will be a black mark sometime in the future, that they jot down anything out of the ordinary.

When I did my testers course it was a 2 day affair, and I knew every word in the testers manual , today the training course is a whole 5 day week , they can never remember everything in the Tester's manual now .
