....and some pics of the operation....patient is doing well....
Raise the body of the car thus giving clearance at the rear of the front suspension using two big trolly jacks. The rack is wangled out the side. The scissors jack is used to slowly offer up the rack pinion to the steering cloumn UJ. I had to put a loop of rope around the UJ and hammer it down to pull it onto the pinion. I am not going to drive it until my Magnefine filter arrives so I don't shredd this rack too. What a long job.....My body still hurts. Prize to anyone who guesses which car the scissors jack comes from and extra points to the year of manufacture.

I AM IMPRESSED! It is a JAG XJ6! The year is a 1994 though, so no bonus but you do know your stuff. My mate lined up the steering with two pieces of string and a tape measure. And you know what, it drives straighter than when Kwik-Fit lined it up with there laser computer.

Well I received the Magnefine filter 2 days after I fitted the rack which was a pain as I had to drain down the reservoir again. I fitted the filter 1/2 way down the return line which led to a big mess and spilled fluid as the fluid oozed back up the pipe when cut. I couldn't cut the pipe with the fan cowling in place so I had to remove it. Next time I replace it I should be able to unscrew the jubilee clips without removong the cowling. The under side of the engine looks like an oil bomb has gone off. Anyhow, all is done and hopefully no more rack problems.

Some tips I've found useful for DIY wheel alignment:
I've had success with the 'trackrite' guage sold by Gunsons provided you can find a reasonably smooth level surface to use and keep the guage clean internally. I've also used the poster paint stripe across the tyre method, again this requires a reasonably level smooth dry surface. Both methods require patience but are effective on both front and rear wheels. |

I was talking to the guy who does my MOTs and he says "GSF and ECP rebuilt racks are crap. If you want a decent rebuild, get one from Volvo". They charge twice as much but it lasts twice as long.
Just to make my day, some wee fkas ran their coins down the side of my car today. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
