Default Dashboard not lighting up

My dad is currently in Spain and he mentioned the dashboard on his S60 (2011 D3 SE Lux) doesn't light when he's in a tunnel. He doesn't drive around at night time but I assume he would have the same issue. Has anyone come across this?

Two things I can think of. Is the instrument lighting dimmed right down via the thumbwheel. Or is there anything covering the sun sensor on the dashboard.

I'll get him to double check the dimmer, but unless it's faulty I don't think it's that because there is zero light emitted and so has no idea what speed he's doing in the tunnels!

Whereabouts is the sun sensor?

Sun sensor is in the middle of the dashboard, it's the LED that flashes when the car is locked, if anything is covering/blocking it that could cause the problem.

The thumbwheel dimmer on the light control panel. Same problem on my car after cleaning the interior and inadvertently scrolling it to "minimum" !

No worries, I'll get him to check it. From what he says, there is zero light coming from the dash. I'll be popping over to Spain in a few weeks so if he gets not where I'll get a chance to investigate.

I hadn't touched that thumbwheel for about 7 years ! When I was in a Tesco store underground car park, the dash seemed to have no lighting at all.

Good point, I'll have to check when I get to Spain in a couple of weeks. His speedo etc do work but there's no illumination.
