Some interesting points there. Nearly a sentence together as well.

Not a D5, but a 2.4D which differs only in the engine map. It seemed OK and smooth enough to begin with (rose tinted spectacles?) but more and more I began to grudge the fact that almost any other car, even small hatches like other half's Polo always seemed so quiet and smooth in comparison.

After 4 years' ownership I quit my job, daily mileage tailed off to just 5-10 miles, DPF-telated issues kicked in, and the car had to go. I replaced it with an otherwise identical 2.0t and wow!, reallised what I'd been missing. Smooth and quiet, and great power delivery. I now regard the 4 years I spent with the S60 diesel as 'wasted years' as far as my motoring career goes.

The MPG is of course better with diesel. Some people will claim you get twice the MPG, others fail to see such large benefits. Believe who you will, but don't disregard Volvo's own published figures, which in general show the petrol cars achieving 70-75% of diesel MPG in like-for-like driving. My own findings entirely agreed with these Volvo figures.

The D5 S60 is a great car to drive if you want one just buy it.
I can drive an S60R and V70R anytime but for economy and cost give me a diesel D5 anytime.
No contest in my opinion.

Agree with that , i think the fact i also have a bmw 330 fitted with the fantastic M54 three litre six pot petrol highlights for me just how tractor like the D5 is , bit unfair really , however the d5 does give fantastic economy on a run and has bags of low down oomph

Hmm I feel a bit torn now.. If the petrols are that much nicer to drive-is the 2.0t a viable option if pulling power is needed, one of the factors that initially attracted me to the D5 was the impressive torque (every couple months or so the car will likely be filled w/4 adults on a longish[300-400mi]trip) does the 2.0t have the torque to deal with a 300kg plus passenger load and not struggle to overtake etc?would it be sitting at 3000rpm+ at 60 with that load? although I dont doubt the 2.0t is much nicer with just the driver in the car

EDIT:The D5 really seems fine in terms of refinement, for the price and of the cars and the torque and power vs economy it cant really be beaten.

When it comes to my 170000 mile D5, I'm firmly in the camp that sees large benefits.
I'll hold my hands up and admit however that in the end, I only got 1050 miles to this particular tankful

Haha well 'only' 1050 miles per tank seems pretty damn good under any circumstances, even if you were just going up and down the M6 at 70mph!

Bottom line is and i speak as d5 owner if mpg is the main issue go for the D5 if its not then the turbo petrols sure are far nicer cars to drive especially the T5
