Exclamation Volvo 142/105 engine question

Hey there!
Last week i obtained an 1971 volvo 142/105 car that i stripped for parts for my volvo 144.
My question goes like this, the engine in the 142/105 is supposed to be somewhat special isn't it?
It's not an B18 sport as one would think, but according to the papers it's an B20 sports engine,, it also says B20 on the block...? After asking around in my local volvo community most people have heard of the myth about an original "tuned" engine that was mounted in very few volvo 142/105 cars...

It is supposed to have bigger valves and so on, but i have no idea?
Someone who can enlighten me on this topic?
The car has been sitting in a barn since 1972, the man who owned it died just after purchasing it and his wife didn't have a license so she just left it there, she usually started her up a couple every year and took her for a drive around the house just to check that she was still working and running nicely.

So i can most definetly say that the engine has never been swapped, so whats the story with this engine then...? I tried to drive her around the block and there sure as hell was alot more horsepower in that engine than in my original B20 engine I actually could do burnouts with the car in both 1'st and second gear, swirling around in circles on the tarmac with both wheels spinning... :O

I coould only dream of doing that with my original B20

So if anyone knows the story behind such an engine and can give me some specs, that would be great!!

Best Regards

Hi and welcome.
Your english is very good.
You should be able to make the wheels spin in first second and third gear with standard tyres.
As far as I know the 142 only has a std B20. If you want to check if it is a big valve head then you will need to remove it. The big valve head has 48mm intake valves and std sixe exaust.

Question

Hey! Thanx man, but theres just one problem, the volvo is called volvo 142-105, and according to a volvo workshop they seemed to remember that they made som special volvo 142's with an tuned up B20 engine...

I have had around 3 volvos with B20's in, and none of them has been so wild as this one! I even had one engine that was fully restored but still, nothing like the power i felt in this one!

The engine roar was out of this world, and i can sure as hell tell you, there is no chance in hell i can make my original volvo produce so much power out to the rear axle to make both the wheels spin around, and spin around in circles on the tarmac (asfalt)

That's why i was wondering what the deal could be with this engine, according to the original papers from volvo that was inside the compartment it is supposed to be an volvo B20b sport engine...

Only thing that rotten bastard had changed before he died, was that he switched the double SU carburettors into a single stromberg carb.
And still there was alot of power in that engine! Luckily the original double SU's were in the trunk of the car, so i guess i'll have to mount them on and see what kind of power i get then!

Best Regards

I should imagine it has the R sport exhaust and possibley a hotter cam (normal B20b has a basic C cam) probably K or R I would think. The odd thing to me is most of the R spec car were fitted with the twin solex carbs (look a bit like webbers)
I know the B20 fitted only with a good flowing exhaust will kick out a lot more power that a std engine.

Your car probably has the B20D with 105 bhp.
