problematic heater 360
Hi all
my heater blower has become erratic, it was working when i set of for work, then it stopped a while later when i hit some bumps it started. i have found that if i turn it on by the switch nothing happens, but when i get to pos 3 i hear a click from a relay under dash ( i think) or it will run on one and two and then stop on 3 then it wot go again then the next morning its fine as far as i am aware no fuses are blowing in the normal fuse box but am i loooking in the right one the question is is it the switch the relay or the blower or none of them any help or pointers would bw appreciated matt |

RE: problematic heater 360
Hi Matt,
from experience I would say you have a problem with the fan resistor pack. This device cuts the voltage to the motor to give you the lower speeds.Fastest speed is 12volts to the motor. All current for the fan goes through a set of points within the resistor pack, on fast it also goes thrugh a relat (the one you can hear under the dash. The resistor pack is located within the air box under the bonnet, you have to remove the large self tappers that hold the air box to the car (under the bonnet)and remove the clips that hold the two halves together you will then see the device screwed inside. Top tip, bite the bullett and get a new one from Volvo dealer. Paul.

Hi paul.
thanks for the info saves me stripping down the dash to get at the switch is this resistior pack repairable?? im ok with a soldering iron, and have acces to resistors etc.. as an aternative, can the fan be hard wired i dont mind if i only get one speed out of it.. if not, how much is this dealer item likly to cost?? regs Matt |

RE: problematic heater 360
Hi Matt,
I have a 340, so this may not be of any use to you - I don't have any experience of the 360. Also, please forgive me if this is obvious and you have done it already. My heater became erratic a few years ago and the garage were unable to sort it out. I removed the blower, took the case apart (required a bit of coaxing) and cleaned the carbon brushes, etc. The brushes were not very worn (not bad for a car which was then about 13 years old) and it has worked fine since. Cheers, Gavin. |

RE: problematic heater 360
Hi Just checked the web to see if I could get help with this problem and found this useful site. Any advice on this most welcome.
Have late (G Reg - 1991?) 340 in very good condition (owned since 94). Heater Blower control just packed up (3 years ago it was once erratic but 'cured itself'). I have tested that volts to the blower motor appear on multi meter when switching from '0' to '1', but no action from fan, also nothing when switching from '1' to '2' or '2' to '3'. I am wondering if this could be faulty fan motor engine or dodgy switch. I tried to take fan engine out (which is riveted to case) but spare wheel rest bar gets in way - I did not want to dismatle all of this, drill out rivets etc just to find out it is faulty switch and I should have started on removing radio etc to access back of switch! (Fuses look OK). Just wondered if anyone else had any ideas from experience about where I should direct my repair efforts. I note other posting re resistor pack. I (think I) see from wiring diagram in Haynes that speed of fan controlled by resistors not varying voltage so presumably should get 12 volt meter reading across fan motor wires at whatever fan setting I have - which is what I got, does this mean switch is OK and problem could be with resistor pack as described in other posting, or dodgy fan motor (I am no expert with vehicle electronics preferring the oily end of affairs, but I can solder OK so could repair like with like if I could work out what was fault). |
