egr
hi all the egr on my dads v50 2.0d 55 plate has gone, we have taken the pipe off and sprayed some wd40 type stuff on it which seemed to have worked (but for how long) it just seemed to be stuck, can anyone tell me if you can change it youself and how much a new egr is, as volvo wanted £400+ to change it
many thanks biggs |

it can be donme but not easy , there is a 5mm alen bolt on the underside . Also the system has to be adapted to suit the new valve . The new valves arent giving trouble now so that should be the end of it . New Valve about £170 ...

Most of the time it is soot which gets up the valve stem and jams the valve , it is just like an engine exhaust valve ... Other times it is the electric motor which opens and shuts the valve ... if you can get it off and thoroughly clean the stem it may be ok ...

Would it be too much to ask for a couple of photos biggs? If possible, it would be great, showing not only the valve after removal but its exact location on the engine too.

Biggs, does you Dad do a lot of in town driving? This is one of the things that seems to stuff the early EGR valves.
When I had my S40, I used to dose one tank-full a month with Redex Diesel (mind you, I did do 2000 miles a month), and take the car for a high speed motorway trip to blow the crud away every now and again. A good blast seems to suit this engine, the MPG and performance were significantly better coming back to Norfolk from Newcastle (Mum-in-Law visits) than on the outward Norfolk to Newcastle journey!
