Advice needed from a newbie
Hello and sorry for my first post being a request for help!!
I bought a 2004 S40 (new shape) in January of this year and I have been very happy with it so far. However for the past few weeks I have been getting a strange noise from the car that I can't work out what it is and was hoping maybe someone might have an idea. The car drives like new and starts no problem, however when I switch off the car I get a really strange noise from under the bonnet, it sounds electrical but I can't figure out what it can be. It seems to come from the left hand side near the light but its a strange noise and it is quite hard to describe. Anyone had anything similar..... Its a S40 2.4 SE automatic if that helps. Grateful for any pointers that anyone may have...... |

Hi claire welcome to the site,I don't know about your model of car but could it be the cooling fan. They can still run on after the engine is switched off and will eventually stop when the temperature has lowered.
Someone on here will have a better knowledge of your model so you will get to the bottom of the problem sooner or later. Regards Brian. |

It's a long shot but it could be the headlight itself. I have an odd issue (that I just ignore) where after turning the ignition off the levelling motor in my left headlight "shoogles". That's the best word I can think of to describe it. It has done it for over a year and doesn't affect the operation of the headlamp.
You can tell for sure by removing the headlight unit and unplugging the cable to it....run your car and then switch off. If there's no noise it'll be that.

Is it a buzzing sound? does it happen when you turn the ignition on as well? I'm just throwing something out here, but sometimes when you turn the ignition on the vacuum pump will kick in until there is enough vacuum in the brake booster. The vacuum pump switches have a tendency to fail causing the vacuum pump to stay on (buzzing sound). This will eventually burn out the pump so both the switch and the pump will need to be replaced. I'm just not sure whether this happens after shut off. |

Its normal , the ECU stays live for a couple of minutes whilst various control motors reposition themselves ready for the next start ...

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll keep an eye on it and see if I can figure out if it is just normal. The car should be due for a service soon so I'll ask at the garage but will try the light before hand.
Many thanks for your help. Claire |
