In fact before I swapped mine some years ago now I sniffed around locally and found a firm that would refurbish the existing backboard with new material. The trouble was it would cost £300 or so and you can't really get suitable comparable material to reline the headliner (or you couldn't then).

The only realistic sensible priced option was one from a 940. I don't think if you took your time that the hole for the sunroof is much of a problem. I am sure that the IPD site has some pics etc of the sunroof version.

When you take out the headliner you can also check that the drains for the sunroof are clear as they do tend to block with age.

Hi Bob,

I have the saloon 740 so I'd need to find a headliner for that with a sunroof hole. Couldn't find any in stock with IPD so I guess I will have to scour the web to find one that will fit. I may look for a firm near me who have experience with the car. Thanks for the advice!

Be careful removing the headlining Dan!

As you can see, mine didn't come out in one piece but i had another to go in. Also many upholsterers/trimming specialists will either refuse to do the job because of it or only quote you £Arms and Legs to make a new one and fit it.It's pretty common sadly that they're in this sort of state.

On the 7xx, the headlining material wraps round the sunroof tray and then the internal seal/trim ring secures it. On the later 9xx, the sunroof hole is bigger and the sunroof tray doesn't have the upwardly sloping lip for the headlining material. It uses a two channel seal, bottom channel goes on the headlining, top goes on the sunroof tray. You'll need this seal from the later car as well and then a nibbler or similar to take off the lip on the sunroof tray. I haven't done it all to mine yet as these days my hands aren't as steady as they once were and i don't want to send the nibbler the wrong way!

Other than that, on the estate, it's actually easier to remove the headlining if you don't remove the trim along the sides, just loosen it - i imagine the saloon would be similar. The headlining can then be moved to one side and the other side dropped down and then the first side pulled out. Also there is a hook/slide-clip on top of the headlining that engages with a cut-out in the car roof, make sure this engages as it's a pain having to loosen all the trim etc again just to correct this mistake - no prizes for guessing how i know this!

Recommend you try one from a 960 as those are thicker for extra soundproofing
