Steering problem 2012 XC60
I have a 2012 XC60 with 185,000 miles. When cold/ first starting, the steering (sticks/catches) at the 10 & 2 o'clock positions. This causes erratic steering. Before and after those positions it is normal (easy). After 30 minutes of driving it mostly goes away. There are no unusual power steering sounds. What would cause this? Dealer says it is the power steering pump, I don't see how the pump would make the steering wheel stick at only those two positions. Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW I just today replaced the electric rear hatch struts and am very happy I did.

What’s the fluid like? Should be nice and green but if it’s never been done it will be well past its best. A good flush and a clean of the reservoir will do it wonders.
The pumps can be pressure tested. This would give you an accurate yes or no on the pump but I’d start with a fluid change if not done so already.

Could it be the universal joint on the steering column?

Worn shock absorber top mounts can also cause notchy steering, or the universal joint. All needs diagnosing properly, otherwise its guesswork.

My dealer only knows how to charge high fees. They want $1800.00 to replace only the pump. Correct me if I am wrong but the pump looks very easy to replace through the right side fender.

You don’t have to bring it to a dealer to replace the pump. Any reputable garage should be able to do it at a fraction of the cost of what the dealer will charge. Just make sure they use Volvo parts or quality aftermarket at a minimum.

I would replace the pump myself, butt this is what comes with the new pump instructions "Requires application specific reprogramming." Can the unprogrammed pump be driven to the dealer?????
