whoever does it make sure they check the head face AND Block face for flatness , If the engine has overheated they could be warped and you will be wasting good money just changing a gasket .

Definitely agree with Clan, no point changing the gasket if the head/block is warped as it will happen again straight away.

It could be alloy corrosion around the head if it has not had volvo coolant for many years … Head gaskets don't usually fail with just the passage of time , something has caused it ..

Make sure you check teh block is flat and re surface teh head.

Gaskets are not too bad but the are time consuming to change

Get a sniff test done on the coolant. That'll tell you if it's exhaust bubbles.

There's a place in Cardiff that you could try. I haven't used them myself, but a colleague used them for an engine rebuild, and speaks highly of them.

I have a spare head if you are interested, removed from my car 3 years ago as the valve stem oil seals needed done, I bought a second hand head and had it built up with new stems and gaskets etc so the car wasn't off the road for too long, being collecting dust ever since...
