S80 D5 upgrade advice for previous S80 owner
Hey there everyone
I've bought my very first P24 Volvo S80, having two P2's previously… and its a D5 :-) I'm incredibly pleased with it. It's a 2007 SE Sport model, Geartronic and has lots of toys that our older 03'SE didn't have. The biggest thing I miss is the Dolby surround system.. but I digress… It's the first D5 I've owned, the very first diesel car altogether come to think of it, and I just wanted to get some advice to give myself some peace of mind if anything. 1/ is it normal for these auto box's to think about doing something for a few seconds before springing into action? I don't seem to be able to make it into roundabouts as quick as I could before. Also, there's hesitation when using kick down on overtaking. Again, only for about a few seconds. 2/ Sometimes under acceleration from standstill, the wheels feel like they're spinning out, and the steering wheel vibrates quite harshly, but the traction control indicator does't illuminate. Is that normal? 3/ The diesel "clacker" is quite prominent in the cabin - at idle, and can be heard when cruising at 70mph also. I've only driven my dad's Mondeo TDCi and my cousins' Transit mini bus, so I don't have much to compare to, but they're relatively quiet when cruising in comparison. I had the oil changed from the Mobil 1 0w30 FE stuff that Volvo put in during a service, and replaced it with Titan LongLife 0w30 so I could go back to the 18k mile service interval. Doesn't seem to have made a difference in engine note. 4/ The ride is quite firm, and It does have Four-C chassis. The firmness is noticeable in all modes it's in, and from what I can tell, having it in comfort just makes the car bounce a bit more on un-even surfaces. I suspect this is more to do with the 18" wheels as opposed to problematic suspension? 5/ Do I have much to worry about with the D5 engine - regarding maintenance etc? 6/ Do these P24's suffer with the same suspension and engine mount issues as the previous gen models? I apologise if all these seem amateurish questions. I normally research things incredibly well before committing to things I buy, and I guess I should have test drove more of these models before purchasing, but it was available for a good price, and it looked the best/had the best spec out of the ones in my price range on auto trader mobile Thanks in advance for any help! best wishes with your new car. I'm more than happy with my D5 (the 205bhp version) other than its appalling fuel consumption compared with my previous 163bhp model. Just normal servicing should be sufficient.
I find mine slightly more clattery than average, though this disappears once on the move. If you can hear much at speed it might need looking at. I've had similar experience with autos over last few cars, sometimes a ;software' update when next at the dealer fixes it. Usually I put it down to my light foot (in an effort to reduce consumption ..)
