Default S40 1.6d very poor mpg

Hi

I have just recently bought myself a S40 1.6D 2005MY.We needed a diesel vehicle that would give us great MPG and after reading the specs we picked the S40 as an all rounder.(Saftey/Comfort/interior ETC)

There seems to be an issue with this Vehicle.I have been monitoring the onboard computer and it says I was getting 38 MPG but when I conducted a test using the figures calculated filling the Vehicle up and driving the below milages and then refilling tank again.Done on two occasions.

1) - 52 miles on 10.56 Litres (Town Driving)
2) - 72 miles on 12.58 Litres (Town Driving)

I know I will never achieve what the spec sheets say but this is almost half!!

The Vehicle drives great,Power is good and no black smoke or any leaks.I have also scanned the Vehicle and no fault codes stored.

Any ideas ?

No idea whay your fuel consumption is so high, although there seems to be something wrong. As a guide, using litres per miles covered, I get 52 miles from 9 litres of fuel in XC60 D5 (about 26mpg) on a bad day, around town,so yours should be much better.

Other, more mechanically minded people will give you a better idea of what any issue may be, although maybe change the air filter if its clogged?

Regards

It would help in the s40 section, although I can see the problem straight away town driving will not get you anywhere near spec ones, plus I would use them only as a guide due to them being in lab conditions.

True! I never noticed the section the OP had posted in!

Whilst as you say town driving will not get the OP anywhere near the official figures, I get more from a twin turbo 2.4 D5 around town than he does from his 1.6d...!! - and my figures are pretty poor compared to official, so if I was getting even less from a small 1.6d I would be crying..!!

Yes, but this is the inherent problem with the 1.6D it needs quite a few revs to get that body moving around, and if your engine is cold during it it worsens and there is little to elevate the problem - I mean take my C30 2.0D from stone cold through town it does not get warm until the best part of the other side of town where the roads open up a bit (all 30 mph all the way into and across town obviously). I noticed this that mine drinks like anything do it when it is warm though it is a whole different story.

For example during the Summer I made quite regular trips across town for around 1 week ish...my MPG fell by 4 MPG over the whole tank despite my best efforts starting from a cold start, irony is that my MPG during Winter so far has actually been better than this I have lost around 2-3 MPG.

Week after mainly going dual and some small amount of town work it was back up to my usual average.

Hi

I would like to give members an update to this post.

1.Fuel Consumption has improved dramatically to 40MPG around 7L/100.
2.This is true mileage and logged via an App called Fuelly.Brilliant!!
3.I blocked off the EGR yesterday and will let users know my findings.
4.Before blocking off the EGR I noticed that the Vehicle has lost some power.I noticed this
I feel that this is from standstill to around 3500 rpm. After that I feels better. Its not dead
but it's not so responsive. No faults logged and no other noticeable issues.
5.Let me know your thoughts.

Cheers
