V70: General - Looking to buy V70 - advice please

Hi. I'm looking to buy a V70 R Design 2.0 diesel manual. I currently drive a Saab 9-3 Aero sportwagon but looking to change as need a bigger boot. I have excellent spec on the Saab (sat nav, heated seats, parking sensors, bluetooth) so trying to find same spec or as near as (I'm willing to compromise). Unfortunately I've dragged my OH from Newcastle to Hull to Leeds, then today down to Huddersfield and onto Cheshire. He's pig sick :-)

My budget is between £10-£13k (preferably lower end of bracket). My question is (although I know Volvo engines are excellent) has anyone bought a high mileage ie 90k onwards on say a 59 plate? I don't do high mileage and will not be towing. Is there certain things that will be on their way out (apart from cambelt)? My OH can't see the point of buying a car with such high mileage but due to my budget and the spec I would like I don't have much of a choice.

A volvo dealer, Johnsons, has a nice silver one for sale but has 97k miles and asking just over £10k. Does anyone have any advice? Anyone have any knowledge on this dealer before I try to convince my OH of another trip? Any help appreciated. Cheers

We just bought a 59 plate 2.0d V70 for £11.5k. I asked myself the same question as you, is a higher mileage one going to be ok. I concluded that being the "lesser" 2.0d PSA engine (designed by Peugeot, funded by Ford, rather than a proper Volvo unit like the D5) that we would aim for as low mileage as our budget could get. Ours has 39k on it, so for about £12k I wouldn't go higher than 50k.

At 75k the DPF should be replaced (according to the schedule), so it's worth bearing that in mind too. If it has 90k on it, was this done? If not, no problem but you may need to do it soon. It'll cost a few hundred quid. In fact, I've heard of the 75k service costing a grand because of this. There's a few cars around with about 75k on, and none of the ones I enquired about were done (surprise, surprise).

Don't let the need for heated seats and Bluetooth make you pay over the odds. Some prices seem to really inflate because of this!

Don’t get too hung up on the DPF (Diesel Particle Filter) issue as Volvo in their wisdom refer to the ordinary fuel filter in the service schedules as a DPF ……… Diesel Primary Filter ………. and this gets changed at every 37.5K service…………………..if they are like my Jeep then expect to pay £30 for the filter element, but being as volvo diesels are 'very Ford' then £15 - £20 would be nearer the mark.

As I see it the Diesel Particle Filter is a self-cleaning mechanical device that gets flooded with derv under pressure to purge the soot and therefore should only need to be replaced when it is faulty, whereas, the Fuel filter is a consumable and should be changed in accordance with the service schedules.

The DPF on this PSA engine system is scheduled for full replacement at 75k. Nobody forces you to replace it but its not a "life of car" item. It also requires topping up with Eolys fluid periodically.

Mileage is not a indication of condition,,, Just adjusts the amount you pay

Spec, History, Condition, all come before mileage,,
Quite often, a car doing 25K plus per year is a better car than one showing low annual miles,, and offer's much better value

Thanks for the replies. That particular car I was looking at sold the morning after I posted my question so am looking at another one. Have started another thread though as refers to a D3. Thanks

I've just bought an 09 V70 D5 and it was 86k miles when bought in November last year. Now on 94k miles. It has quite an impressive spec and was bought within your budget.

As for DPF, the 4cyl 1.6 and 2.0d require an additive in the fuel (as mentioned above) which means the DPF needs replacing at 75,000 miles. The 5cyl engines avoid this. http://www.volvocars.com/uk/sales-se...te-filter.aspx

I can't recall if the cambelt is 5yr/90,000 miles or 6 year/118,000 miles but I was quoted £800 by a dealer for the cambelt service. Luckily mine was done by the dealer before selling the car.

As I'm in work with not much to do, I decided to browse through AutoTrader with your requirements. It does seem that Auto's are generally better speced but come with the D5 engine mainly. This is a good example.
