Default Lubing my U/joints

Last year I had the steering u/j joint replaced at the same time as the steering rack.It now works as well as from the factory.

To keep it this way I want to lubricate the u/j. But what with and how?

Thanks

I have only done mine once but I put a liberal application of ATF over the UJ's and put a tray underneath to catch the excess, I then wiped off the excess with a rag after about half an hour of soaking.

I've not done it myself on the Steering UJ but would it be possible to tap a hole for a zirk fitting?

You won't need photos Jim, just spray them with whatever lubricant you want, I used ATF for it's creeping properties, I'm sure as Dai said grease will work fine too. I've done it once and that was years ago and it has been fine since, although there was nothing wrong with it before I just got a bit twitchy as at the time a few people started asking me for steering UJ's as theirs had started to seize up.

I know Mhuk bought one from me to fit to his car and the one he took off he covered in ATF and it was fine afterwards, that's why I used ATF on mine.

Another name for a grease nipple. J.

I learnt this the hard way. Early Imp kingpins had them - they required attention every 5K miles - and lasted at least 50K. Later ones were 'sealed for life', had no nipples and (obviously) required no greasing. They lasted 15K if you were lucky!

Regards, John.

My 1991 945 has ujs which have a plug removable with an Allen key. Take out the plug and screw in a grease nipples and job done. Put the plug back in afterwards.
These are all original parts and have never needed replacement.
