Default P1800 Tyre choice

Does anyone have any experience of prefered tyres for P1800s? I have tried two types: The old standard of 165SR15 Cincuratos which may look a little skinny by modern standards but do give a very pleasant, light steering. Alternatively, on a later car I have 185/65R15 (Goodyear) which seem to give a very heavy steering. I have not swopped them over to check that it is the tyres that are causing the heaviness but I suspect this is the case.

Anyone have any favourites they would suggest when it comes to change them?

All the amazons we have running on 195/60/15's have much lighter steering than when they were on 165's.

Can you keep the original wheels with this tyre choice?

What's the grip like in the wet compared to the standard size tyres, and is the steering also lighter when turning it from lock to lock with the car stationary?

The reason I ask is that I have a set of 5.5 wide Cosmic alloys* that I want to fit to my Amazon, & good quality 195/65R15s are much more sensible money than 185s or 175s. However, I'm concerned about the extra width making the steering too heavy when parking (I live in central London so regularly have to park in a space only 2' longer than the car) and / or the lower contact pressure of the tyres resulting in less grip in the wet, which would be inconvenient as it's my everyday car!

Thanks!

*Same as the wheels in the first pic in this thread

The 195's will fit onto the std amazon 4 inch rims. They are so tight on the rim they give no roll on corners so work VERY VERY well.

As to lightening the steering I've found they are much lighter on the move and just a little lighter when parking. The important thing is to inflate the tyres to the correct pressure.

As to size for the 1800 on 6" rims I would say with a stock engine (with or without mild mods exhaust etc) 195/65/15's will work well. If it is tweaked then go for some 205/60/15's. Always use a good brand tyre - I have found remolds do grip better than budget tyres but do not last very long.
