Noise coming from bottom of engine / Gearbox on XC90
We have noise coming from the bottom of the engine/ gearbox area on our 18 year old XC90 D
The noise stops when you apply a hammer to touch the surface - The noise is getting louder over time Hard to explain in words - Please see video link below showing what is going on https://share.icloud.com/photos/0yJi...ehym8A#Selkirk Thanks in advance for any help you can offer |

Check the condition of the engine mounts, particularly the one under the crankshaft pulley. Also make sure the OSF driveshaft intermediate bearing cap bolts are tight. Does the noise/vibration stop when you press the driveshaft or engine with the hammer shaft? Or does it increase in frequency and noise volume as you increase the revs? If you jack the engine up using a piece of wood under the sump does the noise stop?
I wouldn't imagine that you could silence a noise caused by an imbalance in the reciprocating parts of a transmission just by touching it, so my initial thoughts are that it isn't too serious. It sounds like something is misaligned and either needs adjusted or replaced. Vibrations can sometimes by tricky to diagnose, as the part causing the vibration can easily be overlooked because of its apparent physical disassociation with the source of the noise. Try the above checks and report back with the findings.

As above, if the rear engine mount has failed it will allow the gearbox to come into contact with vehicle. 👍

Thanks for this your quick replies Dancake and S60D5-185
In answer to your questions Dancake 1. The engine mounts look in good condition 2. The noise does stop when you press the drive shaft or the engine with the hammer shaft 3. The noise does not increase in frequency when revved 4. If the engine is jacked up with a piece of wood under the sump - the noise does stop Any further thoughts on this would be much appreciated |

That would lead me to believe that you have an issue with one or more of the mounts. Check the transmission torque mount to see if the metal frame of the mount is touching the transmission at all. If it is, there's a chance that the main engine mounts have sagged a bit.
