Default 850 tailgate lock

Shut my tailgate down yesterday, and it just banged against the lock. Could not see any obstacle such a stone. It seems that the 'caliper', or whatever does not want to open out as it strikes the bottom bar. (Hope this all makes sense).

No matter what I do to the locking system, it still will not shut.

I would require new keys.

Have you tried moving the catch mechanism with a screwdriver/pen/key etc to see if it moves through it's travel correctly? It has 2 stages, a bit like the door catches.

If it doesn't then the fault is with the catch. Is it definitely unlocked? The cabling can go where it runs through the hinge, and stops the central locking unlocking the tailgate; at least with an 850 you still have the key to open it with!

If it does then the pin in the body work is out of alignment, and can be adjusted by moving the bit (couldn't think of a more accurate word!) around.

The catch mechanism is independent of the lock, ie if you change the catch the lock does not need changing.

If you want a new catch I have one that does work from my V70, let me know.

A friend had similar with a door on her car (after the kids had been messing getting in and out of the car).
The lock on the edge of the tailgate has a plate in it that rotates to engage the pin on the sill of the door. The plate has two positions (as a sort of deadlock to stop the door bursting open in an accident), if it did not fully open when the door was opened it can flip back round to the first closed position which will prevent the door shutting.
Unlock the tailgate, lift the tailgate so the latch is eyelevel, using a screwdriver or similar push the locking plate downwards whilst pulling on the door handle as if opening the door, the plate should flip round to the open position and the door will then shut normally.

If you've got a Haynes manual the pic bottom left of page 11.9 shows how it should look if properly open. (It's not a great pic but best I could find at short notice)
