Grinding noise, goes when braking
Hi all,
Last few days I have noticed a slight grinding noise on the C70 like metal on metal. I can only hear it with the window down and going between parked cars so the sound is echoing. It's not always there, but more often than not I can hear it and it's linked to speed as you can hear the pitch change as you speed up or slow down. When it is there though it goes completely while braking and then comes back when I lift off the brakes. The car is not pulling at all, drives nice and straight and brakes in a straight line as well. Any ideas what this could be or what I should check? I'm hoping to get it jacked up tomorrow so I can at least narrow it down to a particular wheel, but I've got some other jobs to do as well so it deppens how it goes time wise. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

Heat shield behind one of the discs?
I got a similar noise that just appeared one day in the S70, couldn't figure it out when I pulled in at the roadside, when I got home I pulled the wheel off and found the backplate mounting lugs had rotted, just slid it out from behind the disc and binned it, they're not really needed.

Good shout, that could certainly cause it. I guess if it fails like you had it rests against the disc and my first thought was it was something to do with the disc. I will definitely have a look for this, thanks.
Anyone have any other ideas in case it's not that?

Doesn't seem to be the heat shield unfortunately, they all seem secure and are not fauling the disc. I didn't get round to narrowing it down to a particular wheel today as the other jobs got in the way, but next weekend I will get it jacked up and try each wheel. As long as nothing goes bang before then!

Be a good idea to check the wheel bearings-and see if you have a sticking caliper or piston.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I don't think it is either of those. I did wonder about a wheel bearing initially but I'm not getting the high pitched whine you would expect at speed. Plus a wheel bearing you can usually hear over the road noise but this is very quiet and I can only hear it when the sound is echoing. Could it be the bearing on the way out and just not bad enough to get the whine yet?
I went round and felt the discs after a run and they didn't feel hot enough to suggest a brake binding. If anything the rear drivers side felt a bit cool! Plus you get a warning light on the dash if the brakes overheat so I don't think it's that. If it was sticking would the noise go with braking? At the moment I'm at a bit of a loss, just hope something becomes obvious when I get it jacked up and check the wheels individually. Keep the ideas coming though please guys if you can think of anything it might be.

Yeah, the STC light. Page 7 in the owners manual where it's talking about warning lights under the STC heading says: 'The indicator lamp will also come on of there is a fault in the STC system or when the brakes are overheating, but it will go out when the brakes reach normal operating temperature'. Pretty cool feature, I've only ever seen that on high end cars before. What am I saying, the C70 is high end

Oh OK. Not something that's available on the V70. Are you sure this is actually fitted to your car? How does it work?
Sorry about going O/T, just never heard of this on these cars before. Re. your noise - I agree, wheel bearing is a possible candidate. Jack the wheel off the ground and spin the wheel while holding on to the spring/strut. If there's any roughness in the wheel bearing you'll likely feel it rumbling through the strut/spring - much more sensitive than just listening.
