My 2019MY (September 2018) has developed the same issue in the past few weeks - I’m fairly sure it’s the nearside on that has gone as it sounds like an old man climbing the stairs on the way back down.

But be been told struts are only replaced in pairs and they are £320 each. It will hold if I push it up the last 6-8 inches though. As handy as it is I’d rather have some gas struts and DIY - my A2’s struts have only started to fail in the past few years, it’s nearly 18 years old - this is a bit poor from Volvo to be honest.

Seems to be a common issue. Has anyone asked Volvo to look into it. 3-4 yr old cars shouldn’t needs so much spent on them for something so basic.

I guess the issue is the complexity of power struts vs standard ones. I agree though, on a 3-4 yr old car, spending £640 plus labour to sort something so basic is a bit bad.

Yes, it’s the internal motors in the struts which undoubtedly make them so expensive - which makes it even more galling that they seem to be so susceptible to fail!

The V70 was like the video - hidden gas struts and a separate motor / gear unit.

The V60 has combined gas struts / motors, the hinges at the top are just that, hinges.

You can see the power cable going into the strut on both sides.

There is no gas, it’s a spring and rod mechanism. There’s nothing to leak. On failing ones it’s likely the spring has lost its strength.

Volvo Warrington replaced both struts on my 2019 V60 for free, 6 months out of warranty, citing safety cocerns if it hit me on the head, which it had several times.

Had my struts replaced at the end of last year when the car went in for its service. In terms of the total price I have seen £680 thrown around a lot but including fitting and VAT they are £814! Incredibly there appears to be only 40 minutes labour to remove and replace.

Initially Volvo offered 30% towards this but my dealer felt there was more to go, after a week they’ve confirmed a total of 45%; about 55% more than I wanted to spend but better than a kick in the nuts.

All done and the operation of the boot lid is smoother and quieter than ever before.

Hi,

I have just come across this thread due to my wife's 2019 v60 developing the same issue. The car is out of warranty....just

Has anyone found an aftermarket supply for the struts?

Regards
James

I have done it myself 2 weeks ago. Bought the struts from Volvo and installed in 20 minutes. Aftermarket ones would need the conector and internals to be compatible with Volvo.
