Fuel starvation when parking on a slope.
I have a fairly steep drive that I normally pull my 06 XC70 D5 into forwards to park. A couple of days ago to unload stuff I reversed up the drive and then, because the 'self clearing' M62 became a linear carpark thanks to the snow from storm Arwen, and the local roads became more or less gridlocked, I didn't use the car until this morning.
It was covered in snow and ice mixed with so much vegetation it looked like I'd tried to camouflage the car. Despite reading -4 deg The car started first time and ran perfectly for about 3 mins while I was defrosting/defoliating the car and then stalled. The 'miles to empty' was reading 135 and the slope was about 15 degrees. Putting a spare gallon of fuel in the car it started after self bleeding for about 10 seconds and ran perfectly. This is probably the first time I've ever left the engine running while facing downhill on a steep slope with a relatively small amount of fuel in the tank so I'd like to know has anyone else experienced this and its just 'par for the course'? Or is this an indication that something is wrong in the in-tank fuel pickup system? Cheers John |

I was quite low on fuel, knew where to get gas but had to make a stop on the East Side (Manhattan) on a steep hill. The car was nose up and it wouldn't start.
A gallon of gas got me started. What burned was having to have it towed to The West Side to get to a damn station! No stations on the s**** East Side. DON'T let it get low is the lesson here. |

Thanks for the replies, it's good to know I'm not alone! On thinking about it I've almost certainly parked with such a relatively low fuel level 'nose down' before but its always been a 'start and go' situation rather than idling for several minutes so its probably purely by chance I haven't experienced it before.
