Default D4204T replacements

Hallo! first time caller, long time listener.

I have a V50 2.0D SE Sport 5d and the timing slipped. Not the belt but on the cam shaft.
I've been advised itll be cheaper to replace the engine than rebuild and settled on a price with the mechanic who did the timing in may 2021 before I purchased the vehicle. I'm in a bit of a quandry because up until a day or two ago, I had believed that a D4204T was a D4204T and that I could get one from an S40, C30 or any other P1 Volvo to fit without issues. The mechanic who will be replacing the engine has said to make sure its the right one because they are all different.
I have found a D4204T from an S40 at a great price with 120K miles less than my current engine so I'm looking to purchase that one but now I've got all shy about buying it and I'm a bit stuck as to know which engine I need to buy and how I'll know which is the right model. He said even another 2.0D v50 engine might not be the same so now I'm really confused.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
TIA.
Jacob

UPDATE: I've just been informed that its the injectors that are different and I should be able to take the injectors of my engine and put them on the new. Can anyone confirm that?

What you really need is a new mechanic....

Any 2.0D FoMoCo 4-pot lump from any Volvo will fit. You might have to swap over some ancillaries (manifolds, etc.) but the more on the original engine the better.

If you carry over the injectors on the new engine (best if you can) you may need to recode them if they are a different class - not essential but preferable.
